Who We Are

Our state guidelines say that Adapted Physical Education (APE) is a “service provided to students with disabilities who require highly specialized services to meet their goals for physical education.”

But we are much more than that.

First, we are a small cohort of 10 teachers. We all have teaching credentials and a certificate for APE.

Many of us have advanced degrees. We played sports in high school and college. One of us is even in the Wrestling Hall of Fame!

But most of all we like kids!

We see 95% of the classrooms in the Santa Clara County Special Education Program.

We service students from Gilroy to Milpitas, Evergreen to Mountain View.

We work with students of all ages; kindergarten to post-secondary.

We work with students with mild to severe disabilities, both physical and cognitive. We work with students in the County programs as well as multiple districts.

We work with teachers, para-educators, physical, occupational and speech therapists, parents and the community to bring the joy and benefits of music to all the students.

The students we serve have multiple disabilities. They may be in wheelchairs or use a walker. They may be blind or deaf…or both. They may be at grade level…or lower.

They may not be able to roll a ball. Or they may be able to throw it like a cannon!

As you can see, there is no one simple answer to what we do.

Our skills are unique.

We bring many disciplines and skills together to provide a necessary service to children who might not receive the benefits of physical education.
